Research profile

My work focuses on transcultural contact zones in art, visual and material culture. I am particularly interested in processes of exchange in the period after 1800 which can be read through the trajectories of objects, images, collections, and archives. How are transcultural encounters, conflicts, or even historical upheavals in modernity and the present connected to the impact, reception, or mobility of images, artworks and artifacts? How are the 'biographies' of such objects constituted across times and geographical spaces?

Main fields of interest:
- Cultural exchange in and across the modern and contemporary Mediterranean
- Material and visual evidence and practices of migration
- Canon and canon critique in art history
- Museum theory and the history of collections and exhibitions in a transcultural context
- Historiography and perception of Islamic art and culture in colonial and postcolonial contexts
- 'Object biographies' and (trans-)cultural heritage
